One San Diego police officer was killed and another was wounded in a shootout following a late-night stop to check out a person, authorities said Friday. A suspect was wounded and taken into custody shortly after the gunfight and police hours later surrounded a home as they searched for man described as a possible accomplice.

Two San Diego police officers were shot during a traffic stop late Thursday night, killing one and sending the other to surgery.NBC reports that one suspect is in custody but authorities are continuing a search for other possible suspects. According to NBC7 San Diego,  both officers were members of SDPD’s Elite Gang Unit, and the one who was killed had a wife and children.In a Friday morning press conference, San Diego Police Chief Shelley Zimmerman said she was hopeful about the condition of the injured officer.
