Forty-four people have been killed in a massive bombing in the Kurdish-controlled city of Qamishli in north-east Syria, Syrian state TV reports.The blast was caused by a truck bomb which struck near a Kurdish security headquarters, according to a UK-based monitoring group.So-called Islamic State (IS) has said it was behind the attack, in Hassakeh province, near the border with Turkey.IS has previously carried out bombings against Kurds in the area.A Kurdish-dominated militia, the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), backed by air strikes from the US-led coalition, is spearheading the battle against IS in northern Syria.The jihadist group said Wednesday's attack was in response to air strikes on the IS-held city of Manbij in north-west Aleppo province, where the SDF is on the offensive.

One San Diego police officer was killed and another was wounded in a shootout following a late-night stop to check out a person, authorities said Friday. A suspect was wounded and taken into custody shortly after the gunfight and police hours later surrounded a home as they searched for man described as a possible accomplice.

Two San Diego police officers were shot during a traffic stop late Thursday night, killing one and sending the other to surgery.NBC reports that one suspect is in custody but authorities are continuing a search for other possible suspects. One of two brothers arrested in Belgium in an anti-terror operation has been charged with attempting to commit "terrorist murder".Prosecutors said the 33-year-old man, named as Nourredine H, is also accused of being part of a terrorist group.He and his brother, named as Hamza H, were arrested on Friday after searches in the Mons area and the city of Liege.Hamza H was released on Saturday without charge. No weapons or explosives were found in the searches.Prosecutors did not name the organisation Nourredine H is accused of working for.Belgium has been on high alert since 32 people died in bombings at Brussels airport and a metro station in March.Many more people were injured in the attacks, which were claimed by so-called Islamic State.

The United States proposed on Thursday that the U.N. Security Council renew a peacekeeping mission in South Sudan for 10 days while the body considers clamping an arms embargo on the world's newest state and sending more troops there, diplomats said.After violence in South Sudan's capital Juba earlier this month, U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon called on the Security Council to fortify the peacekeeping mission. He also urged an arms embargo and sanctions for leaders and commanders blocking implementation of an August peace deal."South Sudan remains precariously poised on the brink of an abyss," Ban told a council meeting on peacebuilding in Africa. The mandate for the United Nations mission, known as UNMISS, expires on Sunday, so the United States circulated a brief draft resolution on Thursday, seen by Reuters, to the 15-member council to extend the authorization of the force until Aug. 8. It could be adopted on Friday, diplomats said.

At least 31 people were killed and over 100 others wounded when twin bombings rocked the predominantly-Kurdish city of Qamishli in northern Syria on Wednesday, pan-Arab al-Mayadeen TV said. Tuesday report, the death toll of the powerful explosion rose to 52.
